WordPress BMP to PNG plugin

A free WordPress plugin that converts BMP images to PNG as you upload them. No settings, no external services, nothing to configure.

BMP files are large and uncompressed, and WordPress keeps them exactly as they were uploaded. This plugin does one thing: when you upload a BMP, it saves a PNG copy of the same image and uses that in the Media Library instead. PNG is lossless, so the pixels are identical (an embedded colour profile, if the BMP has one, is not kept), and the file is usually much smaller. WordPress then makes its normal thumbnail sizes from the PNG. What you get Automatic conversion on upload from the Media Library, the block editor, the REST API and WP-CLI. No settings page, no database options, no scheduled tasks and no external services. If your server's image library cannot read a BMP, the file is uploaded as it was and the upload still succeeds. A single filter, thisismyurl_bmp_to_png_convert, lets a developer skip conversion for a particular upload. What to know The original BMP is deleted once the PNG has been saved. Only new uploads are converted, not BMP files already in your library. Imagick reads every common kind of BMP. If your server only has GD, it reads the usual 24-bit and palette BMPs but can fail on rarer ones. WordPress already accepts BMP uploads on its own, so this plugin does not add upload support. It changes what happens after the upload. How to install Download the ZIP from the latest GitHub release, upload it through Plugins > Add New Plugin > Upload Plugin, and activate it. There is nothing to configure. This plugin is not in the WordPress.org directory, so WordPress will not offer automatic updates for it. Its conversion is moving into a larger image-format plugin, Thisismyurl Image Formats.
