WordPress Image Formats plugin

A free WordPress plugin that changes BMP, TIFF and iPhone pictures into pictures websites can show, and by default keeps a safe copy of every original so you can put it back.

Some picture files cannot be shown on a website at all. BMP, TIFF and the HEIC pictures from an iPhone are the common ones (these are names of picture file types). This plugin changes them into kinds that work well on a website. It is safe to try: before any picture is changed, a copy of the original is saved on your own website, unless you turn that off in the settings, and you can put it back with one button.

What it does. When you add a BMP, TIFF or iPhone picture, it changes it into a picture that works on a website. By default, BMP and TIFF become PNG, which keeps the detail. HEIC becomes the best kind your website can make. On the page of a picture that can be changed there is a button to change it and a button to put the original back. Links to a changed picture keep working while this plugin is turned on, because the old link is swapped for the new one when a page is shown. Nothing you wrote is edited. It shows how much space each change saved.

What stays the same. The picture's title, caption and description are not touched, and camera details are kept in the Media Library's details for the picture. WordPress still shrinks very large pictures by itself. If you change a picture it has already shrunk, this plugin keeps the large original too (when copies are turned on), so it can be put back.

Optional. You can also turn on making new JPEG and PNG pictures smaller. This is off to begin with, and if the new file would not be smaller your picture is left exactly as it was.

Privacy. Everything happens on your own website, using the picture tools it already has. It makes no outside connections and tracks nothing.

What to know. Your website needs to be able to make the new kind of picture. Most can, and the settings page tells you which kinds yours can make. If you turn the plugin off, put back any pictures you changed after using them in a page first, because those pages would otherwise show them as missing. Changing many pictures at once from the dashboard, and support for SVG pictures (drawings made of lines and shapes), are planned for a later version. If you are comfortable with the command line, you can change many pictures at once today.

How to install. Download the ZIP from the latest GitHub release, upload it through Plugins > Add New Plugin > Upload Plugin, and activate it. Then go to Media > Image Formats if you want to look at the settings. You do not need to change anything. This plugin is not in the WordPress.org directory yet, so WordPress will not offer automatic updates for it.
